Jason Moon continues to shine at the 2003 NCAA Central Regional, even when windy, wet weather slowed play and raised scores. Moon was one of only a handful of golfers to fire a sub-par round on Friday, and he has lead the entire tournament while helping NC State to a second place showing heading into the final round with a team score of 283-289=572, two-strokes behind leader Illinois. The Wolfpack is the No. 6 seed in the Central Regional, but now leads all five of the teams seeded higher, No. 1 Texas, No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 North Carolina, and No. 5 Minnesota, the defending National Champion.
Moon is looking for his first career tournament title, and only the third individual regional title in NC State history. Tim Clark won the 1997 and 1998 East Regionals. The top-10 teams in each of the three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Justin Walters fired a 72 to stay in the top-20 with a two day 143, tied with teammate Fernando Mechereffe. Mechereffe fired a second round 73. Freshman Stephen Lewton also carded a 73, moving his two day total to 150. Sophomore Sutton Barbrey has a two-day total of 158 after a second round 82.
The final round will begin at 8am Saturday at the Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan.
