WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest used a sweep in doubles play to grab the crutial deciding point and slip past NC State on Sunday at Leighton Stadium on Sunday, 4-3. The ACC foes split play in singles action, with Loni Worsley, Myrna Bawono and Jennifer Jassawalla tabbing wins for NC State. The Wolfpack got off to a cold start in doubles, but threatened late in singles with a strong effort.
Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith teamed together in the No. 1 doubles match to take down NC State's top pair of Kristin Lam and Worsley, 8-2. Katie Martzoff and Danielle Schwartz were winners against the two-spot tandem of Jassawalla and Bawono, 8-2. The loss for the Wolfpack pair ends a four-match win streak. First-time partners Virginia Romero and Carmen Torres put in a valiant effort against the Deacons, but came up on the short side of a 9-7 decision to Elizabeth Proctor and Alexandria Knight.
Worsley, who returned home to Winston-Salem for the match, is currently ranked No. 115 in the ITA poll. She took the first set in the flight three match with ease before getting a challenge in the second by Smith. Worsley took the match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, and looks to creep up the polls after going 2-1 on the week. She is now 4-1 in ACC play.
Bawono needed three sets to claim a victory over Wake's Proctor. Bawono got ahead early in the first set for the win, but Proctor kept things tight in her 7-5 victory in the second. Bawono took the tiebreaker set to finish with a line of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Jassawalla was strong in the fifth seed match and took a 6-1, 6-4 win over Knight.
The Wolfpack will host its final home game of the season versus rival UNC on Wednesday 2:30 p.m. Rain dampered Saturday's Senior Day festivities, so the team will celebrate the day again this week versus the Tar Heels. Fans are invited to attend the match and partake in a free barbecue to be served after the competition.
