RALEIGH, N.C. - At 36-10 overall and 15-4 in the last month, the NC State baseball team has reached a lofty enough position in the Collegiate Baseball poll where it gets harder and harder to move up, simply because there isn't that much more room to the top. And the top teams tend to stay there. Coming off a 4-1 week that included a three-game series win over arch-rival and then-22nd ranked North Carolina, however, the Wolfpack has moved up one spot in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, to No. 5.
The No. 5 ranking is the highest for the Wolfpack baseball team since USA Today Baseball Weekly ranked the Pack No. 5 on May 10, 1993. On May 3, 1993, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America had NC State ranked No. 4, while Baseball Weekly had the Wolfpack at No. 3.
The Wolfpack trails only top-ranked Cal State Fullerton (38-8), No. 2 Florida State (38-7), No. 3 Rice (40-7), and No. 4 Arizona State (42-9) in the high-rent district of college baseball. Two other Atlantic Coast Conference teams besides Florida State and the Wolfpack are ranked in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Georgia Tech (32-11) is No. 11, and Clemson (31-13) is No. 16.
The Wolfpack jumped three spots in the latest polls from Baseball America and USA Today Sports Weekly, jumping from No. 10 to No. 7 in Baseball America, and from No. 11 to No. 8 in Sports Weekly.
