Men's Basketball Holds Annual Awards Banquet

RALEIGH, N.C. - The men's basketball team held its annual banquet Sunday evening at the RBC Center. Josh Powell took four honors, including the Tom Gugliotta Award given to the team's most improved performer. Will Roach was given the Jon Speaks Award for best teammate.
Powell came of age during the season and wowed the audience at the 2003 ACC Tournament in Greensboro and turned heads at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. He also took honors for best field goal percentage (.571), best offensive rebounder (74) and most charges drawn.
Roach, who challenges his teammates on a daily basis in practice, has become known for his tenacity on defense. He received the best teammate award in 2002 as well.
Clifford Crawford, the Wolfpack's lone senior and most dependable defender, received three awards. The speedy guard was often got the defensive assignment of attending to the opponent's leading scorer. He was given the Nate McMillan Award as the best defender and was also credited with the most deflections and best assist-to-turnover ratio.
Marcus Melvin and Julius Hodge were given the award for Most Versatile, and Hodge added honors as the team's best rebounder with 190 caroms on the year. Scooter Sherrill earned honors for posting the team's best free throw percentage (.870). At one point during the season, he hit 35 consecutive shots from the line. Sherrill was also the team's most efficient three-point threat, draining 70 on the year and hitting 40 percent of his shots.
Levi Watkins and Cameron Bennerman were given the Sixth Man Award. The tandem combined for 913 minutes off of the bench. Bennerman was also deemed the Best Screener/Cutter. Ilian Evtimov was earned the Scholar-Athlete Award for posting a high grade point average.
Coach Herb Sendek and esteemed Wolfpack community member Wendell Murphy were on hand to present awards. Crawford unveiled the team's banner representing the team's 2003 NCAA appearance.

Most Charges Drawn (Monte Towe Award) - Josh Powell
Best Defender (Nate McMillan Award) - Clifford Crawford
Best Screener/Cutter - Cameron Bennerman
Most Versatile - Marcus Melvin & Julius Hodge
Most Improved Player (Tom Gugliotta Award )- Josh Powell
Sixth Man Award - Levi Watkins & Cameron Bennerman
Best Teammate (Jon Speaks Award) - Will Roach
