COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second time in three outings, NC State felt the importance of the doubles point. This time the Pack came up on the losing side of a 4-3 decision to the Maryland Terrapins. The Wolfpack got behind early and was unable to forge a comeback to win. Three State players got victories in singles action, and Jennifer Jassawalla and Myrna Bawono went undefeated on the afternoon.
The Terps took the doubles point with wins at the number one and three spots. The Wolfpack combo of Jassawalla and Bawono were taken to the limit by the Terp tandem of Chloe Chavardes and Emily Marker, but prevailed with a 9-7 victory. Carmen Torres and Virginia Romero made a push, but were downed by Jennifer Dent and Andreea Fusea, 8-6. Loni Worsley and Kristin Lam lost 8-2 to Romona But and Marta Jedrzejak. NC State is 1-9 on the season when it loses the doubles point.
The bottom half of the line up was victorious for the Pack in singles play. Worsley, Bawono and Jassawalla took wins in the fourth, fifth and six seeds, respectively. Worsley took care of Dent in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2. She is now 11-6 in spring play, and 5-2 in the ACC. Bawono also won in two sets, taking down Chavardes, 6-4, 7-5. Jassawalla fought in a long match with Fusea. After winning the first set, she tried to finish it off in the second, but came up short in a seven-point tiebreaker. She won the third set super tiebreaker to finish with a line of 6-3, 6-7(3-7), 10-4.
NC State wraps up its season on Sunday with showdown at noon against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville.
