RALEIGH, N.C. - Unable to play at Five County Stadium in Zebulon either Friday or Saturday, NC State will play Marshall in a doubleheader on Saturday at Clayton High School. The first game will begin at approximately 5 p.m. Clayton has a varsity baseball game on the field against Smithfield-Selma at 2 p.m. The Wolfpack and the Thundering Herd will play two nine-inning contests after that.
NC State will start redshirt-freshman Mike Rogers (3-1, 1.55) in the first game of the doubleheader. This will be Rogers' fifth appearance and his fifth start. He has worked a staff-high 29 innings and allowed 19 hits, walked seven and struck out 23. In his last start, March 1 vs. Villanova in the second round of the Hughes Brothers Challenge in Wilmington, Rogers pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout. He walked two and struck out eight. He gave up a single in the first and second innings, and then retired 20 men in a row before leadoff hitter Chris Graziano worked him for a one-out walk in the ninth inning. Rogers retired 22 of the last 23 men he faced, and 25 of the last 27. Rogers enters play this weekend with a scoreless streak of 15 consecutive innings.
Junior lefthander David Hicks will make his first start of the season in the second game. Hicks has made just one appearance on the mound this season, working a pair of scoreless innings February 25 vs. Furman. Hicks worked in eight games on the mound as a freshman two years ago, pitching six innings. He won his only decision and had a 6.00 ERA.
The second game of the doubleheader will begin approximately 20 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. There will be no batting practice prior to the doubleheader. Due to the lack of an available phone line, there will be no Gametracker on gopack.com for the doubleheader.
