Track Kicks Off Outdoor Season at Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. - The NC State track and field team kicked off its 2003 season this past weekend by participating in the 49ers Classic held at Charlotte. Derrick High, Kurtis Marlowe, and Jesse Williams all earned NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in the first meet of the season for the men's team, as did Ebony Foster on the women's side.
Derrick High brought home a first place finish in the 400 meters with a time NCAA regional qualifying time of 47.12, and he was also second in the 200 meters running a 21.58. Kurtis Marlowe also recorded a NCAA regional time with a 3:49.26 for second place in the 1,500 meters. Freshman Jesse Williams, who earned All-American honors during the indoor season, won the high jump by clearing 2.17 meters and also notched a regional mark.
TJ Giwa finished fourth in the 200 meters (21.72) and sixth in the 100 meters (10.93). Monterrio Adams took sixth in the 400 meters with a 48.54. In the 400 hurdles, Andrew Kerins was 12th (55.84) and Jeff Baird took 13th (55.95).
Michael Hill was 10th in the high jump (1.92m). In the triple jump, Hill placed second (14.50m) and Jason Vieira was fifth (14.24m). In the pole vault, Eric Hoverstad was fourth (4.60m) and Justin Farmer sixth (4.45m). Senior Randy Cass had a busy day, finishing second in the hammer (53.16m), seventh in the shot put (13.49m), and 10th in the discus (43.69m). James Rowell was third in the discus with a heave of 49.93 meters.
On the women's side, Ebony Foster earned a NCAA regional qualifying time in the 100 hurdles running a 13.67 and finishing first. Foster also ran the 200 meters in 24.37 for a second place finish. Felicia Fant won the 100 meters with her time of 12.04. Fant was also fourth in the 200 meters running a 24.60. Nasheena Quick was fifth in the 100 meters (12.62). In the 1,500 meters, Janelle Vadnais was seventh (4:38.76) and Renee Gunning took 10th (4:45.10).
In the high jump, Joanne Jackson and April Goolsby tied for sixth clearing 1.55 meters. Sheena Dawkins was third in the long jump (5.74m). Kelly Smoke finished second in the shot put (12.86m) , third in the hammer (49.90m), and fifth in the discus (45.06m).
