Injury Update
No injuries to report this week. In a related subject, sophomore guard Rachel Stockdale will redshirt this season after she had surgery on her right knee. The surgery is called a lateral release, which is basically a cutting and reattachment of the IT band. Stockdale played just two games for the Pack this season. She finished with 13 points, including a 4-7 performance at the arc. She also tallied four rebounds and two assists. She is not practicing. Freshman Jennifer Filipowski had a scope done on her right knee. Not practicing. Senior Amy Simpson is still playing with a bruised right rib cage. Sophomore Liz Bailey is playing with a sprained left thumb which was sustained in practice, Monday, Feb. 10.
The Last Time Against Duke (Jan. 29, 2003)
RALEIGH, N.C. --- NC State women's basketball (9-10, 4-4 ACC) fell to No. 1 Duke (20-0, 7-0 ACC), 54-44, Wednesday, Jan. 29. Redshirt-junior Terah James led the Pack with 13 points and three steals, while the Blue Devils were guided by junior Alana Beard with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The women forced the Blue Devils to turn the ball over more times than any other opponent in their 20 games. In addition, the women outscored and outshot Duke in the second half. NC State tallied 33 points and shot 42.3 percent compared to Duke's 30 points and 32.4 percent. And Duke, despite having the ACC's best 3-pt. shooter in Vicki Krapohl, shot just seven percent on 1-14 from the behind the arc.The fact which makes all of the above information more representative of the game, is that NC State was held to just 11 points in the first half, but came back to outscore, outshoot and force more turnovers in the second half, against the nation's No. 1 team. In addition to James' 13 points, the Wolfpack had two players tally eight points, including junior Nanna rivers and redshirt-junior Kaayla Chones.
Last Win, Last Loss vs. Duke
NC State last defeated Duke on Feb. 18, 2001, 69-55. Tynesha Lewis led with 19 points, while Georgia Schweitzer, now Duke assistant coach, led everyone with 20. The last loss to Duke was this season in Reynolds, 54-44. The last time in
The Last Time Away vs. Duke (Feb. 18, 2002)
The Pack fell, 81-54. Stockdale led NC State with 16 points, which included 4-9 from the arc. Moody chipped in 12 points. Beard led Duke as she cashed in 25 and Tillis had 16. Duke outshot the Pack 50.8 to 36.2 pct.
Give 'Em a Grand
Chones became the 21st NC State woman to reach the 1,000 point milestone when she recorded eight points against FSU on Feb. 9. She did so in complete isolation as she hit the front end of two free throws in the second half. Her total stands at 1,057. She also now has 633 career rebounds after tallying her 600th against UNC. Moody reached her milestone against Clemson on Feb. 20 with a jumper. She needed just two points heading into the game and finished with 13 total. She has 1,041 career points and needs just 20 boards to reach the 500 plateau. NC State has seen nine seasons with two players with at least 1,000 points playing together. There has been just one time with three players having 1,000 pts. and that was with Genia Beasley, Trudi Lacey and Ronnie Laughlin from 1979-80. The last time the Pack had two high scorers was in 1999-00 when Summer Erb and Tynesha Lewis wore red and white. Genia Beasley is NC State's all-time leading scorer with 2,367 points from 1977-1980.
What Just Happened
RALEIGH, N.C. --- NC State women's basketball (11-15, 6-9 ACC) lost to visiting Georgia Tech (18-9, 7-8 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 27, 78-60. Both teams finished with three in double figures. Fallon Stokes led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds. Senior Carisse Moody led the Wolfpack with 16 points and seven rebounds. NC State juniors Kaayla Chones and Nanna Rivers and Labador collected all of their points in the second half, as GT had no answer for them. Chones finished with 13 second-half points; Rivers was solid with 10 on 4-6 shooting and Labador made two threes to finish with seven total points.
Road Woes, Deja Vu?
The Pack has struggled with playing on the road this season. Not once did the Wolfpack win consecutive road games as the squad has collected a 3-8 road docket, which includes a 1-6 record in ACC games. The Pack needs to erase the four-game losing streak it created with losses at Georgia Tech, Maryland, Virginia and Clemson. The last time NC State had a four-game road losing streak was in 2001-02, which maxed at five to close out the season.
Not So Nice
If the Pack wins their next four games, it will prevent a consecutive losing season. If they do not, they will become just the fourth team in NC State history to end the regular slate with a losing record. And, it will be the first time with back-to-back losing seasons. Remember however, this is arguably the Pack's toughest schedule in history after ranking 11th all season in strength of schedule and reaching as high as No.2 in the nation is overall strength of schedule. NC State's RPI has been in the top 70 in the nation all year.
A Long and Winding Road
The Pack can't seem to find a roll yet this season. The resulting schedule has produced a somewhat winding trail as NC State winds in and out between wins and losses. First there were two losses, No. 6 UConn and No. 25 UC Santa Barbara. Then there was a victory, Iowa. Then another loss. The month of December resulted in a loss against Loyola Marymount, a win over East Carolina, a loss versus Washington, a win facing Florida, a loss after hosting No. 22 Brigham Young and then back-to-back victories against Elon and at Seton Hall. However the month closed with a 24-pt. loss to Old Dominion. The ACC season brought new hope with a win against Maryland, but was quickly pushed aside after two-straight losses, No. 11 North Carolina and recently at Florida State. The Pack put an end to its three-game win streak with the loss at Georgia Tech. The three wins came against Virginia, Clemson and Wake Forest. NC State then went on a four-game losing streak, falling to Georgia Tech, Duke, Maryland and UNC. But then went on to defeat FSU to end it. The losses at Virginia and Clemson extended the Pack's losing streak on the road to four-straight currently, before ending a two-straight winning steak at home with a loss to Georgia Tech.
Packing the House
NC State entertained 6,793 fans when it hosted UNC on Feb. 7. The number is ranked 11th among the Wolfpack's top 20 crowds in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack earlier played in front of 13,000+ when it hosted No. 6 Connecticut in the RBC Center on Nov. 24.
Among the Elite at State
Chones joined 11 former Wolfpack women with the prestigious honor of reaching both 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. The most recent achievement was such from Summer Erb (1997-2000). Erb collected 1,221 points and 611 rebounds in three seasons with the Pack. Genia Beasley (1976-80) tops all performers with 2,367 points and 1,245 rebounds. She is NC State's second all-time leading scorer among both the men's and women's squads. MBB player Rodney Monroe reached 2,555 points from 1988-91.
Moody's Moves
Senior Carisse Moody has been on the rise the past eight games after posting double figures in 7-8 games. The post has been the leading scorer in four the last five contests, while coming off the bench in all but the last game. She is currently second in points per game in all games and in conference play with 10.7 and 10.5 ppg respectively. Moody has recorded double-figures the last seven games.
Back to Her Own Way
After sitting for two seasons Terah James is back at it. James needs just five assists to reach 100 for the season, she needs 17 to surpass her freshman year total of 112 ... James also needs just 15 points to equal her freshman total of 217 ... she is one of 12 players to record 11 assists in a game at NC State.
Tip-Ins
Chones has been the teams' field goal pct. leader three of the past four seasons ... Simpson needs just one steal to reach 100 for her career ... Chones now ties for 14th all-time in a season with her 33 total blocks ... she ties Andrea Stinson for sixth all-time in career blocks (84 ... Chones is sixth all-time for career field goal pct., she has made 405-724 for a 55.9 pct. ... Moody is now eighth for free throw percentage in a season with her 78.7 and she is fifth all-time at 72.6 pct.
