Injury Update
No injuries to report this week. In a related subject, sophomore guard Rachel Stockdale will redshirt this season after she had surgery on her right knee. The surgery is called a lateral release, which is basically a cutting and reattachment of the IT band. Stockdale played just two games for the Pack this season. She finished with 13 points, including a 4-7 performance at the arc. She also tallied four rebounds and two assists. Freshman Jennifer Filipowski had a scope done on her right knee. Not practicing. Senior Amy Simpson is still playing with a bruised right rib cage. Sophomore Liz Bailey sprained her left thumb in practice on Monday. Will play.
The Last Time Against Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- NC State women's basketball (6-8, 1-2 ACC) fell to host Florida State (10-3, 2-0 ACC), 64-55 on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Seminoles were led by both Tasheika Morris and Trinetta Moore who each tallied double-figures. Morris scored 15, while grabbing five rebounds and Moore finished with 14 points and seven boards. For the Pack, redshirt-junior Kaayla Chones earned her 17th career double-double with 14 points and game-high19 rebounds. She also led the team in assists with a game-high six.
Kaayla's Countdown
Chones needs just five points to reach 1,000 for her career. With her current average of 14.7 ppg, the center could possibly achieve the milestone today against Florida State. She also did reach another milestone however after she snatched nine rebounds against UNC. Chones now has 604 career rebounds.
What Just Happened
RALEIGH, N.C. --- NC State women's basketball (9-12, 4-6 ACC) hosted the No. 7 team in nation on Friday, Feb. 7. However, it wasn't just the seventh ranked team, it was North Carolina (20-2, 9-1 ACC). After a heated battle the entire game; the Tarheels prevailed for just the sixth time in the 29 years the two teams have convened in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack lost a close one with a score of 66-63. The upside to the loss was that NC State had three score in double-figures, and all were seniors. In addition, the Pack held UNC to its lowest scoring percentage all season, at 34.8, which was a feat the Pack did before against the No. 1 ranked Duke. Senior Amelia Labador led the charge for the Wolfpack with her career-high 20 points, which included a career-high five three-pointers. Seniors Carisse Moody and Amy Simpson each tallied double-figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. For the Tarheels, both senior Coretta Brown and freshman La'Tangela Atkinson contributed a 14-point effort.
The Last Time Hosting FSU (Feb. 14, 2002)
The 64-60 victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Pack as they hosted the Seminoles on Feb. 14. Kaayla Chones led the Pack with 13 points, while Rachel Stockdale followed with 11. With seven seconds left Nanna Rivers and Stockdale finished the game with three free throws to up the Pack by three to end the game. The Seminoles' Tasheika Morris led all scorers with 16 points. Teammate Genesis Choice recorded 12 points.
The Pack has struggled with playing on the road this season. Not once has the Wolfpack won consecutive road games as the squad has collected a 3-6 road docket. They did lose two-straight with losses at Florida State and North Carolina. There are just three road games remaining on the schedule to try for two in a row or more.
Let's Not Make it Five
Since 1974, the Pack has been unfortunate to have just two four-game losing streaks. Of those two, both increased to five games before being broken. The first came in the 1985-86 season when the women lost five in a row from Jan. 7-Jan. 21. That team finished 18-11 overall. The second came last season from Dec. 2 through Dec. 22.
Let's Not Make it Three
If the Pack loses on Sunday, they will have tied their own losing streak record at home with three-straight. The women did it previously this season with losses to UConn, UC Santa Barbara and Washington. Prior to this season, the 1999 squad was the not-so-lucky one.
A Long and Winding Road
The Pack can't seem to find a roll yet this season. The resulting schedule has produced a somewhat winding trail as NC State winds in and out between wins and losses. First there were two losses, No. 6 UConn and No. 25 UC Santa Barbara. Then there was a victory, Iowa. Then another loss. The month of December resulted in a loss against Loyola Marymount, a win over East Carolina, a loss versus Washington, a win facing Florida, a loss after hosting No. 22 Brigham Young and then back-to-back victories against Elon and at Seton Hall. However the month closed with a 24-pt. loss to Old Dominion. The ACC season brought new hope with a win against Maryland, but was quickly pushed aside after two-straight losses, No. 11 North Carolina and recently at Florida State. The Pack put an end to its three-game win streak with the loss at Georgia Tech. The three wins came against Virginia, Clemson and Wake Forest. Since the GT loss, NC State is on a four-game losing streak (GT, Duke, Maryland).
Looking Ahead at Virginia (10-11, 4-6 ACC)
Currently on a two-game winning streak and a four-game winning streak at home ... will play at Duke on the 10th ... recently defeated Wake Forest, 64-44 ... Teamer also leads the team with 14.8 ppg overall and 8.4 rpg ... Blue dished out a career-high nine assists against Clemson ... Graham recently broke the school record for most free throw makes, she made 31-straight, the streak began at Georgia Tech on Jan. 16 and ended at UNC on Jan. 30 ... Teamer has 17 career double-doubles, four this season ... FR C Deidra Chatman was co-Rookie of the Week on Jan. 20 ... Virginia is 8-2 at home this season ... the squad is 2-2 against ranked teams this season ... SO C Lynette O'Reggio has a team-best 19 blocks, including a game-high six when the team was at Wake Forest ... Ryan opened the season with a career low 0-4 slate.
Packing the House
NC State entertained 6,793 fans on Friday against UNC. The number is ranked 11th among the Wolfpack's top 20 crowds in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack earlier played in front of 13,000+ when it hosted No. 6 Connecticut in the RBC Center on Nov. 24.
Similar Seasons?
The 1987-88 season saw the Pack finished 10-17 overall. After 20 games, the squad had a record of 8-13 after 21 games. They did not play against Florida State as the Seminoles were not in the ACC at that time. However, the Pack posted an 0-2 record against the Virginia Cavaliers. NC State is 1-0 against UVa this season.
Among the Elite at State
Chones will join 11 former Wolfpack women with the prestigious honor of reaching both 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. The most recent achievement was such from Summer Erb (1997-2000). Erb collected 1,221 points and 611 rebounds in three seasons with the Pack. Genia Beasley (1976-80) tops all performers with 2,367 points and 1,245 rebounds. She is NC State's second all-time leading scorer among both the men's and women's squads. MBB player Rodney Monroe reached 2,555 points from 1988-91)
