Chapel Hill, N.C. - The NC State track & Field squads competed at North Carolina in the Carolina Heels Challenge Saturday afternoon. This was one of the last meets before the Indoor ACC Championships, set for February 21-22 at North Carolina.
TJ Giwa had an impressive day for the men in the sprints, bringing home two top-five finishes. Giwa won the 200 meters in 22.15, and was fifth in the 60 meters with a 6.99. Monterrio Adams finished sixth in both the 60 meters (7.01) and the 200 meters (22.40). Kurtis Marlowe won the mile for the Wolfpack, finishing the race in 4:15.42. In the 400 meters it was Adam McGugan in ninth (50.96), Andrew Kerins in 10th (51.42), and Jeff Baird in 11th (51.64). Brian Kaminski was 17th in the 800 meters running a 2:02.44. Manny Lawson took sixth (8.55) in the 60 meter hurdles, while Jesse Williams was ninth (8.81).
For the second straight week, Lawson won the long jump. This week Lawson brought home a mark of 23'06.25", and he was also second in the triple jump (47'07.25"). Also in the long jump, Derrick Harris was sixth (21'07.50") and Chris Ganey took 10th (19'06"). In the triple jump it was Michael Hill in third (47'01") and Jason Vieira in fourth (46'05.25"). In the pole vault, Eric Hoverstad was fourth (14'11"), and Justin Farmer took seventh (14'05.25"). Williams had another top finish in the high jump, this week placing second by clearing 7'01.50". Michael Hill was seventh (6'04") in the same event. Randy Cass finished second in the weight throw with a heave of 55'01", while James Rowell placed third (52'03.75"). Cass also added a seventh place showing in the shot put (45'07.75").
On the women's side, Felicia Fant once again led the way in the sprints. Fant broke her own school record and finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.53. NaSheena Quick took fifth in the 60 meters (7.75). Kristin Price brought home a second place finish in the mile with her time of 4:52.99. Also in that race, Janelle Vadnais was fifth (5:02.52), Leslie Jimison took eighth (5:05.98), and Kara Price was 13th (5:11.44). Vadnais was also the Pack's top finisher in the 800 meters, placing 11th in 2:19.89. Karen Medlin was 13th (2:21.21) and Jimison was 15th (2:24.06) in that race as well. In the 60 meter hurdles, NaSheena Quick was fifth (8.93) and Krystal Neely 13th (9.33).
Sheena Dawkins brought home a second place finish in the long jump with a top leap of 18'10.50". Teresa Reed was eighth (11'07.75") and Allison Weavil 16th (10'02") in the pole vault. In the triple jump, Desiree Mittman placed fifth (36'06.25"). April Goolsby was 11th in the high jump, clearing 5'03". Kelly Smoke was third in the weight throw with a top heave of 57'00.75".
