Puerto Rico, P.R. - NC State leads a talent-packed field after the first round of play at the 2003 Peurto Rico Classic with a team score of 268, even on the round. Three golfers sit in the top five of the field, including Fernando Mechereffe, who is tied for the lead with a first round of 69, three-under par.
The 18-team tournament features eight of the top-15 teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. No. 1 Clemson, No. 5 Florida, No 8 and 2002 National Champion Minnesota, No. 9 Duke, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Illinois, No. 13 Georgia and No.14 Northwestern headline the field. NC State is No. 45 by Golfweek and Golfworld has the Wolfpack at No. 21.
Mechereffe is tied with Clemson's D.J. Trahan after 18 holes. Just one stroke back is All-American Justin Walters and freshman Stephen Lewton at two-under par, with rounds of 70 on the day.
The Wolfpack's Sutton Barbery and Rodney Thomas are tied at seven-over, and sit in 58th place.
Action is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. EST and will conclude late Monday evening.
