NC State News
Chones recorded her 1,000th career point against Florida State ... the Pack evaded a four-game losing streak with the win over FSU on Sunday.
Injury Update
No injuries to report this week. In a related subject, sophomore guard Rachel Stockdale will redshirt this season after she had surgery on her right knee. The surgery is called a lateral release, which is basically a cutting and reattachment of the IT band. Stockdale played just two games for the Pack this season. She finished with 13 points, including a 4-7 performance at the arc. She also tallied four rebounds and two assists. Freshman Jennifer Filipowski had a scope done on her right knee. Not practicing. Senior Amy Simpson is still playing with a bruised right rib cage. Sophomore Liz Bailey sprained her left thumb in practice on Monday. Will play.
The Last Time Against Virginia
RALEIGH, N.C. --- NC State completed a three-game home winning streak with a clutch shot over Virginia to win the game, 50-49. Redshirt-junior Terah James connected on a 15-foot jumper with two seconds remaining to thwart the Virginia comeback in the second half. The win puts the Cavaliers at 0-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, its worst start in school history. Despite Virginia's leading scorer, sophomore Brandi Teamer, earning her third double-double this season, and sophomore La Tonya Blue hitting two free throws to put the Cavaliers ahead, Virginia left Reynolds Coliseum with its fourth-straight ACC loss.
Kaayla Does It, Moody's On the Way
Chones needed five points against Florida State on Sunday to become the 21st NC State woman to reach the 1,000 point milestone. She did so in complete isolation as she hit the front end of two free throws in the second half. She also now has 613 career rebounds after tallying he 600th against UNC on Friday. Moody needs just 12 more points to accomplish the same feat. NC State has seen eight seasons with two players with at least 1,000 points playing together. There has been just one time with three players having 1,000 pts. and that was with Genia Beasley, Trudi Lacey and Ronnie Laughlin from 1979-80. The last time the Pack had two high scorers was in 1996-97 when Chasity Melvin and Jennifer Howard wore red and white.
What Just Happened
RALEIGH, N.C. --- NC State women's basketball (10-12, 5-6 ACC) downed Florida State (15-6, 7-3 ACC), 57-52 on Sunday, Feb. 9, in Reynolds Coliseum. Led by senior Carisse Moody's 20 points and a season-high 13 from sophomore Kendra Bell, the Pack ended a four-game losing streak. The Seminoles' Tasheika Morris led all FSU scorers with 14. In addition, NC State redshirt-junior Kaayla Chones earned her 1,000th career point. Despite a slow start in the first half, NC State never gave up its lead. The upside was that NC State had the upper hand as it held Florida State scoreless for the first six and a half minutes. The majority of the second half was dominated by the Wolfpack as it took command with an 11-point lead with seven minutes remaining. Moody finished with 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Pack. The double-figure performance was her third-straight since putting in 12 against Maryland on Feb. 1.
The Last Time Away at Virginia (Feb. 2, 2002)
Virginia freshman Brandi Teamer posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers to a 61-57 victory over the visiting Wolfpack. Nanna Rivers led the Pack with her career-high 14 points. She also had eight rebounds. Neither team performed well from the arc as NC State was 1-12 and UVa was 1-9.
The Pack has struggled with playing on the road this season. Not once has the Wolfpack won consecutive road games as the squad has collected a 3-6 road docket. They did lose two-straight with losses at Florida State and North Carolina and then again with losses at Georgia Tech and Maryland. There are just three road games remaining on the schedule to try for two in a row or more.
Let's Not Do it Again, or Should We?
If the Pack loses at Virginia on Thursday, NC State will have lost three-straight on the road, for the first time this season ... the Pack has not won in Charlottesville since Jan. 11, 1998 with a score of 67-59 ... that year the Pack swept the Cavaliers, which was the first time since 1989 ... in total, the Pack has accumulated only seven sweeps since the two-game ACC circuit began in 1981 ... An eight-year sweepless drought happened from 1990-97 ... if the Pack sweeps the Cavaliers this year, it will break the current four-year drought, ensuring that another eight-year drought will not occur.
A Long and Winding Road
The Pack can't seem to find a roll yet this season. The resulting schedule has produced a somewhat winding trail as NC State winds in and out between wins and losses. First there were two losses, No. 6 UConn and No. 25 UC Santa Barbara. Then there was a victory, Iowa. Then another loss. The month of December resulted in a loss against Loyola Marymount, a win over East Carolina, a loss versus Washington, a win facing Florida, a loss after hosting No. 22 Brigham Young and then back-to-back victories against Elon and at Seton Hall. However the month closed with a 24-pt. loss to Old Dominion. The ACC season brought new hope with a win against Maryland, but was quickly pushed aside after two-straight losses, No. 11 North Carolina and recently at Florida State. The Pack put an end to its three-game win streak with the loss at Georgia Tech. The three wins came against Virginia, Clemson and Wake Forest. NC State then went on a four-game losing streak, falling to Georgia Tech, Duke, Maryland and UNC. But then went on to defeat FSU to end it.
Looking Ahead at Clemson (15-12-10, 4-7 ACC)
1-4 in recent games, defeated Maryland on Feb. 9, 85-67 ... FR F Amanda White led the scoring effort with 21 points ... she was named ACC Rookie of the Week after averaging 13 points and 4.3 rebounds against Virginia, Duke and Maryland ... will play at North Carolina on Feb. 16 before hosting the Pack ... SR G Chrissy Floyd has been the team's leading scorer the six of the last seven games ... she averages 16.5 ppg in all games and 12.2 ppg in the ACC ... White is also the team's leading rebounder with 6.8 rpg ... two Clemson players have recorded five blocks in a game this season, including FR F Khaili Sanders and JR G Lakeia Stokes ... 3-3 in conference games at home this season, 7-4 in all home games ... lost previously to the Pack, 63-55 on Jan. 20 ... the Tigers lead the ACC in blocked shots with 104 total, 4.73 pg ... have three players with 20 or more blocks, including White, Sanders and Stokes ... the Clemson house, rather LittleJohn Coliseum, reopened this season with several new features and additions ... the record is 289-83 in 27 years at the Coliseum ... roster features seven underclassmen.
Packing the House
NC State entertained 6,793 fans on Friday against UNC. The number is ranked 11th among the Wolfpack's top 20 crowds in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack earlier played in front of 13,000+ when it hosted No. 6 Connecticut in the RBC Center on Nov. 24.
Among the Elite at State
Chones joined 11 former Wolfpack women with the prestigious honor of reaching both 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. The most recent achievement was such from Summer Erb (1997-2000). Erb collected 1,221 points and 611 rebounds in three seasons with the Pack. Genia Beasley (1976-80) tops all performers with 2,367 points and 1,245 rebounds. She is NC State's second all-time leading scorer among both the men's and women's squads. MBB player Rodney Monroe reached 2,555 points from 1988-91.
