RALEIGH, N.C. - Two men's tennis players at NC State were recently tabbed the No. 8 doubles team in the ITA Mideast region. Freshman Dennis Myers, from Charlotte, N.C., and junior Conor Taylor of Dublin, Ireland, went 8-5 in the fall as a doubles team, overcoming a 0-4 start as they both struggled to adjust to being teammates for the first time.
"This is a great accomplishment for these young players and for our young program," Choboy said of the ranking. "They worked very hard and got into the main draw out of the qualifying brackets by playing great tennis against some of the best teams in the region."
Myers and Taylor started the fall out 0-4, dropping matches to doubles teams from Miami (Fla.), Central Florida, William & Mary, and the No. 3 doubles team in the Northeast, Turner and Berens from Harvard.
The Wolfpack duo would respond in their next tournament three weeks later, winning the doubles title at the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational with four straight wins. The win streak would reach eight as they continued their hot play into the Omni-ITA Region II Indoor Championships. Myers and Taylor defeated Kane/Russell of William & Mary, the No. 6 team in the Mideast region doubles rankings 9-7 before defeating another team from William & Mary. Kelleher/Ward was the No. 5 seed in the ITA Championships, and the No. 12 ranked team in the recent ITA rankings, but they fell to the hot NC State tandem 8-4.
The men's tennis season continues in the spring with the ACC Indoor Championships on Jan. 16-18. The tournament is hosted by Wake Forest University.
