Raleigh, N.C.-The name of the book, appropriately, is "Skywalker." NC State's David Thompson reached new heights - both figuratively and literally - when he was establishing himself as arguably the greatest basketball player in ACC history from 1973-75. A player whose skill and athleticism were unmatched in that day and time, Thompson reached the pinnacle when he led the Wolfpack to the 1974 NCAA title. But the remarkable story of his rapid rise to fame is equaled only by his inspirational recovery from a tragic fall that led him into drug and alcohol addiction. Thompson tells his story in "Skywalker."
Now a successful motivational speaker, Thompson reaches out to those who might be so inclined to make some of the poor decisions that ruined his career and nearly ended his life. But for those who are unable to hear him speak, the next best thing may be "Skywalker," an autobiography that details the many peaks and valleys through which Thompson has traveled since his childhood, spent inside a cinder block home on a dirt road in Boiling Springs, N.C.
A two-time national player of the year at NC State, Thompson still holds the school record for points in a game (57), season scoring average (29.9) and career scoring average (26.8).
Before descending into his battle with drugs and alcohol, Thompson also became one of the best players in professional basketball during his stint with the Denver Nuggets. Thompson's basketball life culminated with his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
Still remembered mostly for his electrifying ability on the court, Thompson is perhaps well on his way to entering another hall of fame, the one that honors those who make a special effort to inspire others to make the most of their lives.
Just as he did during his playing days, David Thompson is still walking in rare air.
This Saturday, December 13th at 1:00 p.m., David Thompson will be signing copies of "Skywalker" at Borders Bookstore in Cary (1751 Walnut Street).
