Raleigh, N.C. - Playing in its final regular season game of the season, the NC State men's soccer team defeated UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in double-overtime Saturday afternoon at Method Road. With the win, the Wolpfack (9-7-1) improve to 8-0-1 at Method Road this season, becoming the first team in school history to go undefeated at Method Road in the 20 years NC State has played its home games there. Sophomore Aaron King notched his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 107th minute, and keeper Jorge Gonzalez shutout the visiting Seahawks (10-7-1). NC State next faces North Carolina in the ACC Tournament this Wednesday.
After both teams went through the first 106 minutes without a goal, it was NC State which notched the lone goal of the contest. Senior Chris Gannon took a loose ball and played it up to King on the right wing. King dribbled into the UNCW box and slotted the ball into the lower right corner just past Seahawks keeper Brad Knighton. For King, it was his fifth game-winner this season, tops in the ACC.
Before the game, NC State honored its two seniors Hiroki Kawase and Gannon.
NC State and North Carolina tied each other for fourth place in the ACC during the regular season, and will battle each other in the first round of the ACC Tournament. In the two teams previous match-up this year, the Wolfpack and No. 3 Tar Heels tied 1-1. The two teams face off Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary.
