Wolfpack Readies to Host No. 2 Texas

NC State (1-0) will host the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns (1-0) in the Second Annual Women's Jimmy V Classic on Sunday, Nov. 23, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack and the Longhorns tip-off at 12 p.m. on ESPN2, while No. 3 Duke will face No. 5 Purdue at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
NC State enters the game led by senior Kaayla Chones. The center helped NC State take an 84-50 victory home on Friday, Nov. 21, versus Loyola Marymount, by posting up a game-high 16 points and six rebounds. Senior Alvine Mendeng grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. In addition, r-sophomore Rachel Stockdale started and played for the first time since playing against Connecticut in the Jimmy V Classic last year. This time around she added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists to the team box score. Junior Kendra Bell took the point guard spot and tallied a career and game-high six assists. NC State has played just one regular season game, which was versus LMU, and one exhibition game, versus the Premier Players.
The Texas Longhorns are coming a solid 85-77 win over No. 3 Duke in the State Farm Tip-off Classic at host Purdue in Indiana on Sunday, Nov. 16. Five players finished in double-figures, including three with 15 points each. Heather Schreiber, Nine Norman and Tiffany Jackson each took away the digits. The other two starters, forward Kala Bowers had six, while guard Jamie Carey had 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and hit two, three-pointers. The difference between a win and a loss in this game may have been a the free throw line, Duke was 18-of-31, while UT went 27-of-36. Also the Longhorns made four, three-pointers, compared to just one by Duke. The team has seven upperclassmen, including the front-back court combination of Stacy Stephens and Jamie Carey, a duo that helped to lead the group to the NCAA Final Four last season. Shreiber and Bowers are two juniors that were also leaders to the event.
The Wolfpack and the Longhorns have met five times before, with the most recent coming on Jan. 23, 2000 in the ACC/Big 12 Challenge, held at Texas. NC State lost 81-77. Chones and James were sophomores and senior Nanna Rivers was a freshman at the time. Chones played 29 minutes, had seven points and eight rebounds. James played 24 min., with five points, three assists and four rebounds. Rivers did not play. NC State is 5-and-8 against teams from the Big 12. The Pack's only win came at home in a double-overtime game on Jan. 10, 1981. NC State came out on top, 91-89.
