RALEIGH, N.C. - Head men's tennis coach Jon Choboy has announced the signing of two of the top players in North Carolina and in the South Region of junior player rankings. Mason Schermerhorn and Charlie Davis are the initial signings, as Choboy and assistant coach Matt Halfpenny will look to add more players later in the recruiting season. Choboy is pleased with his class so far, and with what they bring to the team.
"They are two more North Carolina kids and we are very proud of the fact that they can stay in their home state and play collegiate tennis," Choboy said. "These are definitely two of the best players in the state this year, top players. They both bring more weapons to this team and have good serves. Mason's forehand is big, and Charlie's serve will be the strongest on the team next year in my opinion."
Mason Schermerhorn is No. 28 in the South Region in 18s currently, with the strong possibility that he will end up in the top-5 or top-8 players in the South. The 6-0 player is from Colfax, N.C., near Greensboro.
"Mason is a very good athlete who we have had our eye on for eight months," Choboy said. "We are very impressed with what we have seen. He is a strong athlete and has a very good forehand and a tough first and second serve. He is a determined competitor and we feel he will develop into a very strong college player."
Charlie Drew is a 6-5 player from Goldsboro, N.C. who signed with the Wolfpack and is currently No. 38 in the South. Choboy predicts that Drew will easily move into the top-10 or top-15 when he finishes his senior season.
"Charlie has family who went to school at NC State and is excited about being here," Choboy said. "He'll have a very good serve when he comes in here already, with good mechanics as well. He moves well for being 6-5, and is an intelligent kid on and off of the court. He is also an unbelievable competitor."
