RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's basketball coach Kay Yow has announced the signing of four players - Celanese Bozeman (Hampton, Va./Hampton HS), Tiffany McCollins (Memphis, Tenn./Univ. of Arkansas-Fort Smith), Tiffany Stansbury (Philadelphia, Pa./Gulf Coast Community College) and Khadijah Whittington (Pourtsmouth, Va./Woodrow Wilson HS) - to national letters of intent to play for NC State beginning in the 2004-05 season.
"We are pleased to welcome this quality 2004 class," Yow said. "All four of these players will fill the specific needs from the void that will be left by our graduating seniors following this season. In addition to being exceptional players, they are truly wonderful people who will bring in a lot of intensity and character to our program."
Bozeman, is currently ranked 66th nationally overall and fifth by position as scouted by All Star Girls Report. At 5-10, she is an excellent three-point shooter with a quick release, as well as good ball handling skills. At Hampton High School, Bozeman is a four-year starter and has already eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark heading into her senior season. Last year, in addition to reaching that milestone, she was named first team all-state and was a Street and Smith Honorable Mention All-American. Prior to her third year, she was a two-time second team all-district honoree and helped her team to the state title as a freshman.
McCollins is one of two transfers joining the team. She will arrive at NC State after spending two seasons at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. At 5-7, the point guard has been touted as the best true point guard in the country. In her first season, she averaged 13.0 ppg and 6.0 apg and this year has helped the team to a No. 1 national ranking. As a two-year starter, McCollins was named Bi-State All-Conference last year. She is known for her great vision on the court and is an excellent floor leader. McCollins has a complete game that allows her to push the ball up the floor, deliver it or pull up for the jumper.
Stansbury is the second of the two junior transfers entering the 2004-05 line-up. The forward is a two-year started at Gulf Coast Community College and is coming off a 2003 National Championship. This year, her squad is ranked fourth in the nation. Also as a freshman, the 6-3 post earned Panhandle All-Conference after averaging 11.5 ppg and 8.4 rpg and was named to the JCAA All-Tournament team. Stansbury runs the floor well and will be a great addition to the Wolfpack front line because of her size and inside game.
Whittington stands at 6-1 and can play at both the forward and guard positions. She is currently ranked 19th in the nation by Blue Star Basketball. As a junior Whittington posted 19.0 ppg and 12.0 rpg and was named a Street and Smith Fourth Team All-American. In addition to her All-American status, Whittington was named first team all-state and first team all-district. Also in 2003, she was a member of the USA East team that won the gold medal in the USA Women's Youth Development Festival. She finished with 10 points and three rebounds in 11 minutes in the team's 94 to 82 win over USA South. Her team finished with a perfect 5-0 record throughout the tournament.
