BURLINGTON, N.C. - NC State softball won all four games at the Elon Fall Classic Oct. 4-5 at the Burlington City Park, including a 4-3 win over host school Elon in extra innings. Pitcher Abbie Sims won three games for the Wolfpack and Shaina Ervin won the fourth.
"We did a lot of great things this weekend," head coach Lisa Navas said. "We have something to build from and we did an excellent job as a team."
Elon, a Divison I program out of the Southern Conference, played host to NC State on the second day of the Elon Fall Classic. The Wolfpack rallied from a late 3-2 deficit in the top of the seventh inning to win, 4-3. In the seventh, the NC State answered with two singles by Caroline Blount and Sims, knocking Phoenix pitcher Meredith Gay out of the game. Jennifer Patterson singled to left scoring Blount to tie the game.
Renee LaCroix started the top of the eighth on second base in accordance with international tie break rules. She advanced from second to third on a sacrifice bunt by Allison Cuculich, the first out of the inning. With two outs, LaCroix scored the winning run off of a single by Wolfpack leadoff hitter Heather Gelbard.
"We went into the tie breaker without a chance to practice it," Navas remarked. "The kids executed perfectly."
NC State earned a 4-0 shutout of Young Harris on Oct. 5, getting a strong one-hit pitching performance from Sims. Ervin pitched the Wolfpack to a 3-1 win over Louisburg on Oct. 4, and Sims picked up the win with a three-hitter against Averett, 11-0.
