Four Freshmen Competing in Top of the Hill Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tyghe Carstens will play Jon Trotter of UNC-A at the Top of the Hill Carolina Classic in men's tennis on Sunday at 9:30 am. Carstens advanced after dropping his opening match to Ryan Goldsmith of Richmond, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round and winning his consolation match against Josh Vandergrift of UNC-A 6-2, 7-5. The freshman from South Africa is the only player for NC State to compete on the final day.
Ryan Johnson defeated Vandergrift in the opening round, but fell to eventual Flight C champion Eric Hage of Richmond. Johnson then lost in the North Consolation draw of Flight C to Lenny Gullan of UNC, 6-7, 6-3, 10-5.
William Noblitt and Matt Simeon each won their opening match in Flight B before falling in the quarterfinals. Noblitt defeated Derek Schwandt of Richmond 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. He lost to Brad Pomeroy of UNC in the second round 6-2, 6-2. Noblitt's consolation was the North Consolation title after defeating Stonestreet and Campo. Simeon lost 7-5, 6-1 to Campos in the North Consolation after his second round exit to Andrew Simpson of Wake Forest 6-4, 6-3.
Carstens and Johnson both advanced and won the Doubles Flight C consolation, winning three matches.
