DESTIN, Fla. - NC State sophomore Molly Birmingham recorded the lowest round in school history with a two-under par, 69 to aid the Wolfpack to sixth place after the second round of the ACC/SEC Golf Challenge in Destin, Fla on Saturday. The Pack, which turned in the third-lowest team score of the day with a 294, is just one stroke behind UNC and Wake Forest. They are tied for fourth. Duke is still the team to beat. The Blue Devils enter third round play with an 32 stroke lead over second place Florida. Elizabeth Janangelo took over the top individual spot after putting together a 36-hole, two-day performance of 134 on the The Raven Course, a 5,937-yard, par 71.
"Molly played a steady round of golf today," said head coach Page Marsh. "We worked on her playing pace on the practice range yesterday after the first round. Once she got into a rhythm on the course, she started playing to the potential that we knew she was capable of. Her play today was evident of the type of player she can be."
Birmingham shot four birdies, 12 pars and two bogies on the round.
Lorraine Ballerano is the low scorer for NC State after two rounds. The sophomore has sole possession of 11th place and is just three-over par, 145 for the tournament. Birmingham moved into a four-way tie for fourth place and is eight-over, 150 after 36 holes.
Senior Briana Vega is a part of a six-way tie for 24th, sharing a score of 153 with classmate Courtney Pomeranz, who is participating as an individual. Vega took a stroke off of her round one score to finish with a 76 Saturday. Juniors Ashlee Dean and Colby Cobb are tied for 45th with two others at 16-over par. Dean fired a 78 and Cobb turned in a 77.
"Today we took a step in the right direction," said Marsh. "We had a great round and everyone made improvements after the first round. It's exciting when you can witness the changes that we've seen here in a day. We hope to make some more adjustments and continue to improve tomorrow."
The Atlantic Coast Conference has four teams in the top six entering the final day of play and is looking to take the Commisioner's Cup away from the SEC. Play will begin at 8:00 (CST) Sunday morning with a shotgun start.
