Two Women Advance to Round of 32 in ITA Regionals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - NC State sophomore Nandita Chandrasekar and junior Kristin Lam each won matches in the opening round of main draw play of the 2003 Omni Hotels ITA Southeast Regionals on Friday, Oct. 24, in Winston-Salem. The pair will move on to play in the round of 32 on Saturday.
Chandrasekar defeated Fallon Koon (USC) in three sets. After opening strong with a 6-2 decision, she fell 3-6 in the second set allowing Koon to force a third. Chandrasekar fought back to clinch the win, advancing her to the next round with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision. She will move on to face Kendall Cline (UNC), who is seeded No. 12 in the tournament. They will play at 10:00 Saturday morning. The winner will play again at 1:00.
Lam's win came against East Tennessee State's Carien Venter. Lam dominated the first set, not allowing a single game, but Venter fought back before falling in the second, 6-0, 7-5. Lam moves on to compete with Ashley Robarbs (UT-Knoxville), seeded No. 4 overall, at 9:00. The winner will play again at noon.
Barbara Orlay was defeated in the opening round of the single-elimination tournament by Dandie Knight of Wake Forest. Orlay forced the match to three sets by winning the second 6-3, but fell short in the third, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The two remaining Wolfpack doubles pairs were eliminated after receiving byes to the round of 32. Danielle Stadelmann and Virginia Romero fell just two points short against Kelly Fillnow and Katherine Hatch of Davison, 8-6. Jennifer Jassawalla and Agustina Arechevaleta were defeated by Ashlee Davis and Katie Martzolf from Wake Forest, 8-4.
