NC State Concludes Play at Two Fall Invitationals With Titles

NORFOLK, Va. And COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Heading into the last weekend of tournaments in the fall, head coach Jon Choboy's men's tennis team entered the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational and South Carolina Fall Invitational wanting to make an impression with its play on the court. Conor Taylor was won of four Wolfpack players to advance to the semifinals of a singles draw while two doubles squads would play in the finals on Sunday, Oct. 19 on the last day of both tournaments.
Conor Taylor defeated Calin Milos of Old Dominion in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to win the Flight B draw and complete a personal 9-0 weekend in both singles and doubles. Taylor teamed with freshman Dennis Myers to take the Flight B doubles championship with a 9-8 (4) win over Cabana/Schwandt of Richmond.
Jon Davis and Will Shaw fought into the finals of the Flight C championship where they defeated Vasquez/Harris of American 8-2. Overall, NC State won two of the three doubles flights they participated in at the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
Val Banada dropped his semifinal match despite winning three singles matches prior to Sunday. He lost 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 to Nikola Djordjevic of Hofstra. Myers won four singles matches en route to his finals appearance, but he also found defeat in the tournament for the first time with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Mark Gellard of East Carolina.
Matt Simeon was the lone Wolfpack player in a semifinal at the South Carolina Fall Invitational as he lost to Fernando Fiuri of ETSU 6-1, 6-1 to conclude play.
Overall, NC State players posted a combined 23-9 singles record and a 10-3 doubles mark in both tournaments. NC State will next send individuals to compete in the ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. Oct. 22-26.
