Wolfpack Finds Success In First Day of Two Fall Invitationals

After the opening day at the South Carolina Fall Invitational and the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational, NC State's men's tennis players have combined for a record of 13-3 in singles and 4-2 in doubles action. In sending split squads for the two tournaments Oct. 17-19, head coach Jon Choboy sent four freshmen to the USC Fall Invitational and the remaining six players to the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational, which is hosted by Old Dominion. Ryan Johnson, Dennis Myers, Will Shaw, and Conor Taylor are each 3-0 in singles and doubles.
Johnson won his opening round singles match at the USC Fall Invitational against Dominic Soevr of Raford 6-3, 7-5. He later won two doubles matches with partner Kazuya Otani of South Carolina after his regular doubles partner, Tyghe Carstens, was injured in his singles match. Carstens was injured and took the loss by default against Jose Netto of Barton. William Noblitt and Matt Simeon each won their opening day singles match but fell in defeat as doubles partners to Paiva/Uehara of Hampton, 8-1. Noblitt defeated Ladislav Rezac of Hampton in singles 6-1, 6-0 while Simeon dropped Jordan Isner of the College Of Charleston in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Heading north to Virginia, the remaining six Wolfpack tennis players squared off in the Old Point National Bank ITA Invitational, posting a combined 10-2 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record. Myers, Shaw, and Taylor won two singles matches each in addition to winning their doubles match. Myers defeated Bob Allensworth of James Madison 6-2, 6-1 before advancing to the quarterfinals of Flight C with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Dom Manilla of Old Dominion. He teamed with Conor Taylor to move on to the Flight B doubles quarterfinals after a 8-4 win over Anderson/Malcolm of James Madison.
Shaw dropped Ryan Peisel of Georgetown in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (5) and later advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight B with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) win against Viktor Dusek of Norfolk State. Shaw and Jon Davis defeated Rivero/Schnell 8-6 and will play in the quarterfinals of Flight C Doubles. Davis was a winner against Jon Antle of ODU 6-2, 6-4 before falling 7-6(5), 6-3 to Jeffery Schnell of American University.
Taylor soundly defeated Scott Faust of Georgetown 6-0, 6-0 before topping Milan Jurika 6-1, 6-3 of Norfolk State. In other action, Val Banada won both of his singles matches to advance into the quarterfinals of Flight A with wins over John Snead (James Madison; 6-4, 6-2) and Alex Fish (William & Mary; 6-1, 6-0).
Action resumes Saturday, Oct. 18 and runs until Sunday, Oct. 19.
