Wolfpack Soccer Readies to Take on No. 14 Duke

NC State women's soccer will host No. 14 Duke at SAS Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. The Wolfpack, which stands at 7-5-1 and 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, matches up against the nationally ranked Blue Devils, that enter the game with an 8-4-1 overall slate and a 1-2 record in the ACC.
NC State women's soccer has just two more ACC home games, beginning with Duke today and ending with Maryland on Sunday. The Wolfpack will be at No. 11 Florida State on Oct. 24 and at No. 12 Wake Forest in the final game of the year on Nov. 1. The Pack recently lost to No. 1 North Carolina, 4-1 on Oct. 10. Senior forward Adrienne Barnes scored the lone goal for NC State. Prior to that game, NC State hosted Navy on Oct. 6 and won 3-0. Junior forward Erin Griswold scored twice for her third double-scoring game of the season. She currently leads the team with 21 points (8g, 5a). Sophomore Lydia McBath scored the third goal. Freshman defender Megan Buescher has a team-high eight assists, while senior forward Lindsey Underwood is next with seven. Buescher is second in the ACC in that category. Freshman Megan Connors has been in the net the past nine games. She has made 31 saves and allowed 17 goals. As a team, the Pack has outscored its opponents 27-23. NC State also has a SOG pct. of nearly 50 percent. It is second in the ACC in saves with 3.69 per game and with 3.15 assists per game.
The Blue Devils of neighboring Durham are comining off a split performance this past weekend. Duke was defeated by Florida State, 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 10. The loss propelled FSU into the Top 25. Sophomore midfielder Carmen Bognanno led the team with three shots, while the Blue Devils' keeper, senior Thora Helgadottir made four saves and allowed three goals. The previous match against No. 9 Wake Forest resulted in a much different outcome, as Duke took a 1-0 shutout home. Bognanno collected her second goal of the season after just 35 seconds had ticked off the clock. Individually sophomore forward Carolyn Riggs leads the team with 15 points (6g, 3a), senior forward Gwendolyn Oxenham leads the team with five assists. As a team, Duke has outscored its opponents 31-16, which was a result of its 29 to 16 assist lead. Duke's other ACC loss came against No. 1 North Carolina, 4-0 on Oct. 1.
