Durham, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2002 season and defeated George Washington 3-1 Sunday afternoon in the Duke/Adidas Tournament. The Wolfpack finished as the runner-ups in the tournament, after downing the Colonials and narrowly losing to 10th ranked South Carolina 2-1 Friday night.
Senior Michael Karim got the scoring started for NC State by converting a penalty kick at the 16:05 mark. The goal was Karim's first of the season, and eighth of his career.
The Wolfpack would notch another goal just nine seconds before halftime. Freshman Aaron King put a shot on goal, and Kyle Fragakis collected the rebound and slotted his first career goal. NC State held a 2-0 lead at the break.
George Washington would cut the lead in half when Matt Osborne scored in the 71st minute. Osborne headed in a cross from Michael Goldman to put the score at 2-1.
After some back-and-forth action, NC State would add an insurance goal. King once again notched the assist, as he and fellow freshman Bryant Salter worked a two-on-one that resulted in Salter netting his first goal with only one minute left to play.
NC State outshot GW on the day 14-12. Senior keeper Mitchell Watson finished the day with seven saves, while his counterpart Derek Biss had eight.
Watson, senior Marcus Johnson and sophomore Justin Branch were all named to the all-tournament team.
NC State will start ACC play this Sunday when the Wolfpack host Maryland at 1:00 p.m. at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary.
