Wolfpack Women's Soccer Travels To San Diego

The Wolfpack women's soccer team will travel to San Diego this weekend for the second annual San Diego State Tournament. NC State (1-1, 0-0) will face the San Diego State Aztecs (1-1, 0-0) on Friday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. and the Cal State Northridge Matadors (1-1, 0-0) on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
NC State started off the season with a 2-1 victory over visiting Kent State at SAS Soccer Park in Cary on Friday Aug. 30. Senior Jordan Allison (Greensboro, N.C.) started the scoring in the 31st minute. Allison tapped in a long shot from freshman Erin Ardler (Greenville, N.Y.), for her fourth career goal. Kent State struck back in the 58th minute. Lauren Covay (Oswego, Ill.) flicked a header off a corner kick to Jennifer Frey (Cincinnati, Ohio) who headed the ball towards the upper right corner of the net. The ball glanced off the head of junior Jaci Harper (Murrysville, Pa.) and in off the underside of the crossbar. The Wolfpack weren't done yet. In the 73rd minute, senior Lauren Bendahan (Springfield, Virginia) lofted a free kick into the penalty area. Junior Katherine Warman (Coquitlam, British Columbia) streaked onto the ball and flipped the ball past Kent State keeper Lauren Mitchell (Columbia, Md.).
The Wolfpack fell 2-1 to No. 14 Tennessee at SAS Soccer Park on Sunday, Sept. 1. A total of 35 fouls were tallied for both teams in what turned out to be a very physical match. Once again, NC State kicked off the scoring with a header from senior Erin Bushey (Biglerville, Pa.) off an Annika Schmidt (Welver, Germany) free kick in the seventh minute. Tennessee answered with two quick goals in the second half. The first coming in the 71st minute with a goal from sophomore Lindsey Wiest (Toms River, N.J.). The Volunteers struck again in the 75th minute with a goal from sophomore Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.).
San Diego State will face off against Cal State Northridge today in the first game of the second annual San Diego State Tournament. San Diego State will then face NC State on Friday. The Aztecs opened their season with a 5-1 rout of UC Riverside on Friday, but fell to Loyola Marymount 1-0, in overtime on Monday. Junior forward Kim Castellanos leads the Aztecs in the early going with two goals and one assist for five points. Freshman midfielder Lisette Martinez also scored two goals against UC Riverside, while senior forward Arinda Alvarez had a goal and an assist. Tenth-year head coach Chuck Clegg has also played a pair of junior goalkeepers, Sophia Perez and Stephanie Pearson. San Diego State brings back 16 letterwinners from a team that went 6-11-1 last season. Castellanos was the Aztecs' leading scorer with 10 scores and two assists. The Matadors and the Aztecs have played twice before in San Diego with the Aztecs winning both contests. This will be the second meeting between the Aztecs and the Wolfpack. The Aztecs won the last meeting 1-0 on Sept. 25, 1998.
The Cal State Northridge Matadors opened their season with a 1-0 overtime victory on the road at Nevada on Friday. Junior Shannon DeVos scored a throw-in in the 98th minute to give the Matadors the victory and a 1-0 start to their season. The Matadors then fell 1-0 to the Navy Midshipmen on Sunday in their home opener. Amelia Sheveland beat Matador keeper Jen Jasper from the top of the penalty box in the 88th minute of the match. Cal State dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss. Cal State Northridge returns 14 letterwinners, including eight starters from a team that went 12-3-2 last season and finished third in the Big West. This will be the first meeting between Cal State Northridge and NC State.
