Men's Tennis Opens Season At UVA Invitational

Charlottesville, Va.- The freshman duo of Rehman Esmail and Will Shaw advanced to the quarterfinals in Doubles Flight B at the UVA Invitational as the Wolfpack kicked off the 2002-03 season. Esmail and Shaw advanced with a 8-5 win over Kenan Bell and Ernesto Malagrino from Liberty. They will play a pair from Charleston Southern tommorrow. Will Shaw also picked up the only singles win for the Wolfpack in the Singles Flight A Consolation with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Hunter Skogman of Iowa. The UVA Invitational continues through the weekend.
In Singles Flight A, R.J. Murrary fell 2-6, 3-6 to Robert Seale of Rice and Will Shaw was defeated 3-6, 1-6 by Florian Marquardt, the third seeded player in the tournament, of Virginia Commonwealth.
Singles Flight B saw Rehman Esmail (3-6, 3-6) and John Davis (3-6, 1-6) drop their first round matches. Chris Mills got a bye in the first round of Singles Flight C before William Boyles of Alabama dropped Mills 1-6, 2-6.
Murray lost his Flight A Consolation match, 4-6, 1-6 to Kalan Kiss of Charleston Southern.
Esmail lost to David Emery of Virginia Tech 4-6, 1-6 in the consolation for Singles Flight B while John Davis picked up a bye into the quarterfinals where he will face Cesar Vargas of Nebraska.
