Rainy Weather Cancels Play In The NC State Fall Invitational

Raleigh, N.C. - The threat of looming rain caused Head Coach Hans Olsen to call off the remaining matches scheduled in the NC State Women's Tennis Fall Invitational Saturday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. Seven of the 12 matches were completed this morning before a heavy sheet of rain moved across the baseball field and gushed onto the courts of the Wolfpack Tennis Complex to postpone and eventually cancel play.
Play was first ceased around 10:00 a.m. when a sudden down pour scattered players to nearby tents and overhangs. Shortly after noon, it was decided that conditions would not be fit to continue the tournament throughout the weekend.
Seven matches were completed before the rain stopped play. Three of those matches were NC State victories.
Danielle Staddelmann was the first Wolfpacker to complete her match. Staddelmann, the No. 4 seed in the B1 singles flight, defeated M. Levin of Stetson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Carmen Torres was also in action in the B1 flight. She completed her match shortly after Staddelmann. Torres left the court as a 6-1, 6-2 victor over L. Hess of UNC Wilmington.
Jennifer Jassawalla, who advanced to the second round with a bye as a result of being the No. 1 seed in the A2 singles draw, took little time to grab the first set, 6-1 over Charlotte's A. Murry. Murry jumped out early in the second, but Jassawalla finished strong to take the match 6-1, 6-3.
Loni Worsley and Myrna Bawono were still on the courts for the Wolfpack when the rain shut down action. Worsley dropped the first set to L. Peaty of Armstrong Atlantic State. Bawono too lost the first set to her opponent, Hampton's A. Mitackova.
The Wolfpack will travel to Blacksburg, Va. in two weeks for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
