Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team opened its fall season today as the host of its annual Fall Invitational. The lady Wolfpack looked great in their opening day of play, with six players advancing to the second round of the main singles draw. One player will advance on a bye.
In the A1 singles, senior Myrna Bawono (Jakarta, India) took only two sets to down M. Patterson of Davidson. Bawono was the No. 4 seed in the tournament. She opened strong in the first set, but needed a tie breaker in the second to put the match away 6-2, 7-6(4).
Two Wolfpackers were placed into the A2 draw. Loni Worsley (Winston-Salem, N.C.) bageled Western Carolina's S. Zalinsky, 6-0, 6-0, never giving her opponent a chance to settle into her game. Jennifer Jassawalla entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, receiving a bye. She will see her first singles action of the season Saturday morning.
No. 4 seeded Danielle Staddlemann had little trouble with her opponent, N. Reyes of Charleston Southern. The sophomore from Westerly, R.I. downed Reyes 6-0, 6-1 in B1 singles action. Also in the B1 flight, sophomore Carmen Torres (Madrid, Spain) defeated Winthrop's A. Simancz who entered the match as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The upset was Torres first win as a member of the NC State squad. Torres came to NC State as a transfer by way of Arkansas-Little Rock.
Sophomore Taylor Parker (Marietta, Ga.) also won her match Friday. Seeing action in the B2 singles draw, Parker lost the first set before coming back to win in three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Parker defeated Radford's A. Stevenson. Also in the B2 flight, senior Landis Strader (Greensboro, N.C.) came up on the short end of a 6-3, 6-4 decision to D. Powel of Davidson.
The Wolfpack also had a good showing in its doubles matches. The duo of Kristin Lam (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Bawono won two matches and will advance to the semi-final play on Saturday. En route to the semis, the tandem downed their opponents in games of 8-1 and 8-4 respectively. Friday's play was the first for Lam since her freshman season. Last year she sat out with a knee injury.
No. 2 seeded Worsley/Jassawalla took down their competition with an 8-2 decision, while Torres/Staddelmann won 8-6. Parker/Strader fell 8-3.
All seven squad members will be in action on Saturday. Main draw matches will start promptly at 8:00 a.m., with the A1, A2 and B1 draws. Play in the B2 and C flights will begin at 9:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Main draw doubles will begin at 4:45 p.m. Consolation matches will begin at 9:45 a.m. If time should allow and matches finish early, the schedule may be advanced. All matches are being held at the Wolfpack Tennis Complex near the baseball field on West Campus.
