NC State men's basketball coach Herb Sendek has named Larry Hunter associate head coach. Hunter was a head coach for 25 years including 12 years at his alma mater, Ohio University before joining the Wolfpack program as an assistant prior to last season.
"I always enjoyed competing against Coach Hunter's team when we were in the Mid-American Conference," said Sendek, "and I was really pleased to have him join us last year. As we approach another season, considering the sum total of his coaching accomplishments, including his many years as a head coach, I have decided to name him associate head coach. As a whole, I believe that we are blessed with an outstanding coaching staff."
Hunter's teams posted winning records in 23 of his 25 seasons as a head coach. He made a dozen NCAA tournament appearances as a head coach and with a record of 509-224 was the 16th-winningest active coach in the country at the conclusion of the 2000 season. In 1994, Hunter was named MAC Coach of the Year, and he won National Coach of the Year honors as head coach at Wittenberg University in 1977 after leading that team to the national championship.
"I appreciate and am honored to be named associate head coach," said Hunter. "I have thoroughly enjoyed the past year at NC State and my association with Herb Sendek, our coaching staff, the players, and everyone associated with Wolfpack basketball. I am excited about the potential of the upcoming season. Coach Sendek has put together a terrific program with talented players, a tremendous system and an exciting style of play. I am committed to doing everything I can to help this program be the best it can possibly be and in doing so, accomplish our goals."
