After a brief rain delay, the Pack scrimmaged for a couple of hours this afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium. Statistically, no one player stood out, but there were several big plays, both on offense and defense. As Coach Amato promised Saturday, he did some switching back and forth between his first and second teams. Quarterback Jay Davis did some work with the first team offensive line and all three tailbacks worked with all three units.
Davis completed 13 of his 20 pass attempts, while Philip Rivers was 9-15 for 127 yards. Freshman Chris Moore went four-for-six for 68 yards and all three players threw an interception. Marcus Hudson, A.J. Davis and Victor Stephens each had interceptions, while linebacker Pat Thomas led in tackles with six. Holt also returned a fumble 24 yards for a score. Fourteen players caught passes, led by Bryan Peterson's six grabs for 61 yards.
The coaches put the team in a variety of situations, much like last weekend's scrimmage: goalline, third down, red zone. Sean Berton is still out with a quad injury, while Sheldon Lewin is missing time with a shoulder problem.
We'll find out tomorrow about the extent of injuries to A.J. Davis and Dovonte Edwards. Davis will have his leg x-rayed tonight after leaving the field on crutches and Edwards is having an MRI on his knee. It was such a joy to see a large group of our defensive players gather around A.J. while the trainers were examining him and bow their heads and pray with him. A.J. is very outspoken about his faith, so I know that meant a lot to him. I certainly don't want to sound blas? about their injuries, but I also don't want to speculate on what could happen. Hopefully the news tomorrow won't be too bad. Injuries are certainly a part of any sport, particularly football, but it is never easy to see our players hurting. I guess I'm just like an old mother hen! But athletic trainers Jamey Coll and Mark Greemon give our guys the best care possible and Dr. Mike Fajgenbaum was on the field today, so the guys are in good hands.
Coach will switch things around some tomorrow, with the morning practice concentrating more on passing drills and not being quite as long. The guys will probably be there late tonight watching the film from today's scrimmage.
