Ireland - NC State's own Justin Walters is representing Great Britain/Ireland (GBI) in the Palmer Cup matches against the United States. The annual tournament is named after golf legend Arnold Palmer. The Palmer Cup is an international golf competition between the top eight collegiate golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. Walters is competing for Great Britain because he holds a British passport.
Walters and partner Andy Smith won the first point for GBI in the morning Four-Ball Matches, 6-4. They then dropped their Alternate Shot Foursome in the afternoon session 6-4. Each match win is one team point, with a halved match counting as .5 point for each team. After the first day, USA leads GBI 4.5-3.5.
Walters joins seven other members on the GBI team in the competition. Walters is one of four ACC golfers selected for the matches. D.J Trahan of Clemson, Bill Haas of Wake Forest, and Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech were selected to compete for the United States. Matteson was forced to withdraw before the competition due to an injury.
Walters, a native of South Africa, completed one of the finest first seasons in ACC history. The transfer was playing at the major college level for the first time in 2001-02 and garnered All-ACC and All-American honors after posting a season stroke average of 71.9, third in school history. The rising senior won two collegiate tournaments finishing in the top-20 eight times in 13 tournaments, including top-10 finishes in a team leading five competitions. Walters finished tied for sixth at the NCAA Championships, second in school history to only Touring Pro Tim Clark's T-5th in 1996.
