Week 5: NC State's WNBA Stars Go 7-2

NC State's four WNBA players enjoyed their most successful week to date going 7-2 for their respective WNBA squads during the league's fifth week of the season. Tynesha Lewis's Houston Comets are leading the way at 12-3 overall (.800) and are in second-place in the Western Conference. The Charlotte Sting, represented by Andrea Stinson and Summer Erb, are currently 6-6 and 1/2 game ahead of Chasity Melvin and the Cleveland Rockers in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland kicked off its busy week with a 71-50 win over the Miami Sol on Tuesday. Melvin played 33 minutes for the Rockers, knocking in 14 points and grabbing four rebounds to go with a pair of steals.
On Thursday, Melvin and the Rockers slammed the Sacramento Monarchs 73-50. Melvin posted her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds on 8-14 shooting from the field.
The next night, Cleveland scored a 67-58 victory over the New York Liberty. Melvin scored four points in 29 minutes and was credited with three rebounds.
Melvin capped the week with a 10 point-four rebound performance in Sunday's 79-62 loss to Utah. It was Melvin's 10th double-figure showing of the season in just 13 games.
Charlotte had two games last week, an 80-73 victory over the Detroit Shock on Wednesday and a one-point (56-55) loss to Washington on Sunday.
In the win over Detroit, Stinson put up 22 points in 31 minutes on 9-16 shooting from the field. She also snared eight rebounds and three assists in the victory. Erb played six minutes in the contest and registered one rebound and a block.
On Sunday, Stinson tossed in 14 points in 30 minutes on 6-12 shooting to go with four rebounds and two steals.
Lewis played on minute in Wednesday's 73-55 win over Minnesota on Tuesday. For the week, Houston went 3-0 and has won six of their last seven.
Cleveland begins Week Six with a home showdown against the Portland Fire on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Then the Rockers stay home for a matchup with the Seattle Storm at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday before heading to Charlotte for a game at 6:00 p.m.
Aside from Saturday's game with Cleveland, the Sting have three other contests on the docket. On Monday, Charlotte faces the Phoenix Mercury at 7:00 p.m. before Portland comes to town on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. tip. Charlotte will enjoy national coverage of their game at Miami on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when ESPN is scheduled to carrty the battle.
Houston will be at Utah on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. game with the Starzz. The Comets return home for a date with the 1-13 Detroit Shock on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
