Wolfpack's Kay Yow To Enter Basketball Hall Of Fame

LOS ANGELES, CA., June 5, 2002 - The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today at a special luncheon in Los Angeles, that Wolfpack head women's basketball coach Kay Yow has been elected for Enshrinement into the Basketball Hall of Fame this September 27, 2002 in Springfield, Mass., the birthplace of basketball. Yow is one of six electees to represent the 44th group to enter the Hall of Fame since the institution began the process in 1959. The Hall of Fame will christen its brand new $103 million Hall of Fame and Museum on September 28, 2002.
Larry Brown, head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and Lute Olson, head coach of the Arizona Wildcats were also elected for enshrinement from the coaching ranks, while Earvin "Magic" Johnson and the late Drazen Petrovic were selected from a pool of players. The Harlem Globetrotters will also enter the Hall as a team, the first to do so since 1963.

Yow, a native of Gibsonsville, North Carolina, has 625 career victories at Elon College and North Carolina State, fifth best in women's basketball history. She is 625-268 overall and 568-249 at NC State.Yow, who led the Wolfpack to the 1998 Final Four, has led NC State into the NCAA Tournament 15 times in the last 19 years, a mark that includes nine Sweet 16 appearances. She has won five regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference titles and four ACC Tournament championships. Her teams have reached the ACC Tournament Final in 12 of 25 years.
At NC State, Yow has coached 18 20-win seasons. Her teams have finished in the final Associated Press top-20 poll 16 times in her 27 seasons. In 1978, Yow led North Carolina State to the Elite Eight of the AIAW Tournament. Yow has earned numerous coach of the year awards, including Women's Basketball Coach of the Year by College Sports News (1998), Women of the Year In Sport by the National Organization of Women (1988), the Converse/WBCA Coach of the Year (1990) and the National Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated For Women (2000).

Yow, who is the only women's coach in history to win a Gold Medal at both the Olympics (1988, Seoul) and World Championships (1986), has compiled a 21-1 record in International competition. Yow, who has been inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1988) and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (2000), began her college-coaching career at Elon College in 1972. At Elon, she compiled a 57-19 record, a mark that included two North Carolina State titles. In 2002, Yow received the Star Award from the University, as presented by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.
The Class of 2002 was selected from a record-group of 24 finalists. The Honors Committee has elected Johnson and the Harlem Globetrotters on their first year of eligibility and first time being reviewed as finalists by the Honors Committee. Brown and Yow were finalists last year; Olson has been a finalist the last two years and Petrovic was a finalist three other times since first being reviewed by the International Screening Committee in 1999. An individual needed five of seven votes from their Screening Committee to become a Hall of Fame finalist and 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election.
