CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 3 (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Sting have quickly stamped themselves as one of the top contenders in the WNBA, thanks in part to the efforts of former NC State star Andrea Stinson.
Stinson scored 23 points and Dawn Staley added 14 and seven assists as the Sting won their second straight, 67-52 over the Houston Comets on Monday.
Charlotte rebounded from a 1-10 start last season to reach the WNBA Championship Series, where it was swept by Los Angeles. The Sting opened this season with a thrilling overtime victory over the Sparks on Saturday before defeating Houston, the only other champion the league has known.
All-Star point guard Dawn Staley had 14 points, seven assists and four steals for Charlotte. Charlotte held a 27-23 halftime lead but Houston rookie Michelle Snow had a pair of baskets as the Comets cut the deficit to 29-27 early in the second half.
Allison Feaster drilled a 3-pointer -- her only basket of the game -- to trigger a decisive 15-2 run. Stinson had four points and a pair of assists in the spurt, which she capped with two foul shots for a 42-29 advantage with 13:25 remaining.
A basket by Tammy Sutton-Brown gave Charlotte its largest lead at 56-38 with 7:11 left to play.
Sheryl Swoopes scored 17 points but was limited to just two in the second half as Feaster provided tough defense. Tina Thompson was the only other Comet in double figures with 10 points.
