RALEIGH, N.C. - June 21, 2002
The summer season is underway for college baseball players, and while it is too early to get a real read on how any individual players are doing, two NC State players have made an early mark.
Outfielder Joe Gaetti, a rising junior playing for the St. Cloud Redwoods, leads the Northwoods League in home runs after 12 games with three. He ranks in the league leaders in RBIs with nine, and slugging percentage at .485.
Catcher Colt Morton, a rising junior playing for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League, already has caused a stir in the Cape League with his prodigious power. In a game against Hyannis on June 18, Morton unloaded a mammoth three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the A's to a 6-3 victory. According to Chatham head coach Steve Schiffner estimated Morton's blast as at least 450 feet and said it was the longest at Chatham's Veteran Field since a Chris Combs blast in the 1996 Cape League playoffs.
In addition to Morton and Gaetti, the following NC State players are playing summer baseball this summer:
Cape Cod League: Chad Orvella (Chatham), Michael Rogers (Yarmouth-Dennis).
Coastal Plain League: Daniel Caldwell (Durham), Jeremy Dutton (Durham), Chas Pippitt (Durham), Brandon Shipwash (Outer Banks), Adam Hargrave (Wilson), Ben Hager (Wilson), Justin Riley (Wilson).
New England Collegiate Baseball League: Phillip Davidson (West Warwick), David Hicks (West Warwick), Tim Coffield (West Warwick).
Statistical updates will be provided in coming notebooks.
