NC State football coach Chuck Amato has announced that Greg Williams will join the Wolfpack coaching staff. A 1968 NC State graduate with over three decades of coaching experience, Williams will work with the defensive secondary.
"We are excited to have Greg join our staff," said Amato, who played alongside Williams for the Wolfpack in the mid-1960s. "He has great experience and knowledge of the game. He has coached for and against some of the nation's top teams in some of the nation's biggest stadiums and he knows what it takes to build a championship program.
"Greg will work with our defensive secondary and we will divide the traditional duties of a defensive coordinator among the different coaches on our defensive staff."
A native of Danville, Pa., Williams' most recent coaching experience was at the University of Georgia, where he coached under another former Wolfpack teammate, Jim Donnan. Williams coached the Bulldog wide receivers from 1990-2000 and was the secondary coach in 1996 and 1997. Williams coached the secondary at Duke in 1995, and served as the defensive coordinator at Connecticut from 1992-94. He spent 10 years at the University of Maryland (1982-91), coaching the defensive secondary and serving as defensive coordinator for his last five years with the Terrapin program.
In 1979, Williams coached the defensive secondary at NC State under head coach Bo Rein (Amato was an assistant coach on that staff) and from 1977-78 he served as the offensive coordinator at TCU. He also led the West Virginia secondary under Bobby Bowden in 1975 and was the Mountaineers' defensive coordinator in 1976. Williams also served stints at Tulsa (secondary, 1971-74), Youngstown State (quarterbacks/receivers, 1969-70) and was a graduate assistant coach for the Wolfpack in 1968.
Williams has coached in 11 bowl games, and has been on the coaching staff of six ACC Championship and three Missouri Valley Championship squads.
An all-state defensive back at Danville (Pa.) High School, Williams lettered for the Pack in 1966 and 1967 as a defensive back.
Williams is married to the former Mary Anne Harkins of Danville, Pa. They have three children, Michelle, Mary Elizabeth and Gavin, and three grandchildren, Carly, MacKenzie and Dylan.
