Windy Third Round Blows Wolfpack Into Ninth

Columbus, OH- NC State's Men's Golf team enters the final round of the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championship on Saturday with a team score of 859 (+7) and in striking distance of the lead, trailing leader Georgia Tech by six strokes. The Wolfpack had its highest team total in the third round with a 292 (+8). However, NC State managed to drop only two strokes farther off the lead as only one of the 30 teams completed the third round under-par. Minnesota fired a -1 while Tulsa managed a even-par score in the windy and rainy conditions. Georgia Tech has been atop the leaderboard since the conclusion of round one, and has a three-day total of 853 (+1).
Justin Walters continues to lead the way for the Wolfpack, firing an even-par 70 in the third round to hold steady in a tie for fourth. His three-day total stands at 208 (-5), only three-strokes off individual leader Graeme McDowell of UAB.
Fernando Mechereffe shot a one-over-par 72 on Friday to capture a share of 29th with a three-day total of 214 (+1) heading into the final round.
Jason Moon continued his steady play in the third round by carding an even-par 71. He stands in T-37th with a tournament total through three rounds of 215 (+2).
Garth Mulroy has a three-day 223 (+10) after a third round 78 landed him in T-116th.
Rodney Thomas carded a third round 80 to slide into T-146th with a 228 (+15).
