FARO, Portugal (PA)- Former Wolfpack All-American Carl Pettersson is finding success in Europe to be sweet after he concluded his collegiate career at NC State. The former European amateur champion has finished in the top five in four tournaments this year on the European Tour, and he corralled his nerves and emotions to pull out the win in a sudden death playoff at the Algarve Open of Portugal. Tim Clark, another Wolfpack All-American also recorded a European Tour victory this year after sitting out last year with a severe wrist injury.
Pettersson, 24, fired a first round 66 to take four stroke lead heading into the second, and as it turns out, final round at the Algarve Open of Portugal. The event was shortened to 36 holes because of high winds and heavy rains. Pettersson's 66 was the lowest round of the tournament and one of only three rounds shot in the 60's for the event.
He won a purse of ?124995.00 for the victory.
Pettersson still resides in North Carolina and is originally a native of Sweden.
Clark won in impressive fashion on the European Tour in January at the Bell's South African Open with a two-stroke victory at 19-under-par. The native of South Africa had to win a pre-qualifying event just to get into the tournament and performed brilliantly in his hometown of Natal. He fired a four-day total of 269 (66-70-68-65) to take the title. His prize money totaled ?128052.00.
