Walters Leads NC State To Another Top-5 Finish

Augusta, GA- Golf World Magazine named Justin Walters their Men's College Player of the Week after his individual title at the Schenkel E-Z-GO against nationally ranked competition and lived up to that billing with his third top 10 finish of the year. The junior from South Africa continued his torrid play by firing all three rounds under par, including a blistering five-under-par 67 in second round action. Walters closed with a 209 at the Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational in Augusta, GA, six strokes off of individual champion David Skinns. Skinns set the tournament scoring record as he lead Tennessee to the team title.
NC State has finished in the top 5 in the last three tournaments and in six of the nine tournaments on the year.
Walters (71-67-71, -7) paced the Wolfpack with his third top ten finish of the year. Over his last seven rounds of golf, Walters is averaging 69.4 strokes per round. Walters has recorded six rounds in the 60's, good for first on the team ahead of Jason Moon and Garth Mulroy with five. Wolfpack senior Garth Mulroy was hot on Walters' heels with a six-under-par 210 (71-69-70) to finish 15th. Mulroy is NC State's stroke average leader as he lowered his season stroke average to 72.26. Mulroy also leads the team in rounds-under-par with 13. Walters is second with 10.
Sophomore Fernando Mechereffe finished one-under-par with his second lowest total of the year (215). The newcomer from Pelotas, Brazil sandwiched a second round 71 between his first and third round 72s.
Moon fired a final round 74 to finish 52nd with a three day total of 220. Rodney Thomas carded a 71 to finish 60th with a five-over-par 221.
The Wolfpack return to action next weekend, April 13-14, at The Intercollegiate at the Finley GC in Chapel Hill, NC. A week later NC State squares off in the ACC Championships which are being held at the Old North State on April 19-21.
