Men's Golf In Third After Second Round

AUGUSTA, G.A. - The NC State men's golf team is currently in third place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, held at the Forest Hills Golf Club. Justin Walters leads the way for the Pack after two rounds of action by shooting team lows of 71 and 67, placing him in a tie for eighth with a score of 138 in individual competition.
Low scores were marked all day, tabbing 13 of the 17 teams in play even or under par. Leading team competition is Tennessee after two rounds of play with a remarkable 21-under-par, while Wake Forest five strokes behind in second. NC State's score 567 is good enough for third, landing the Pack nine strokes under par heading into the final round on Sunday.
Three NC State golfers stand at or below par for the tournament going into the last day of action in Augusta. Walters, followed by teammates Garth Mulroy and Fernando Mechereffe, are all shooting below the two-day par of 144. Mulroy, who shot below par in Saturday's action, sits comfortably in a tie for 17th , while Mechereffe cards a score of 143 and rests in a tie for 27th. Jason Moon shot 2-under par 72 for the afternoon to move him into a tie for 47, as Rodney Thomas shot a 74, placing him in a tie for 69th.
Mulroy's rounds of 71 and 69 move him to a team leading 12 rounds under par on the year. Walters' performances of 71 and 67 gives him nine rounds under par, a mark that earns that stands second behind Mulroy. Walters' second round 67 ties his season low round set at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational last weekend.
Action will resume tomorrow as the teams take to the course at 10:30 a.m. for the conclusion of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational.
