Former NC State defensive end Corey Smith, who had 11 quarterbacks sacks over his last two college seasons, has signed a free agent contract with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A native of Richmond, Va., the 6-3, 245 pound Smith started all 11 of the Wolfpack's regular season games last fall.
In his senior year at NC State, Smith was tied for the club lead in sacks (6) and was third on the team in tackles for loss (9). He also equaled a school record by forcing six fumbles.
Here's what the Buccaneers web site had to say about Smith: "Corey Smith was a top-notch pass-rusher at North Carolina State, where he started at left defensive end the last two seasons and racked up 11 sacks and 21 tackles for loss (15.5 and 31 on his four-year career). Smith opened every game for the Wolfpack last fall and contributed 54 tackles and six sacks, while also tying the school's single-season record with six forced fumbles. Those numbers were a near-match for his junior statistics - 55 tackles and five sacks. Though seemingly undersized by NFL linemen standards, Smith was one of the strongest players on the N.C. State team and is blessed with an explosive burst off the line."
