Chapel Hill, NC- Junior Justin Walters was two strokes away from pulling a hat trick with his third tournament title of the season and NC State's Men's Golf team fell one stroke short of upsetting #3 Wake Forest at the Intercollegiate at the Finley Golf Course. Walters finished tied for third with a final round 67, and the Wolfpack finished second with a 842, the lowest team total of the year and lowest since the 2001 NCAA East Regional when the Wolfpack shot a 836. Walters' three-day total of 205 was the lowest tournament total of his career and is tied for the second lowest tournament total in school history. He fell two strokes short of Bill Haas of Wake Forest, the nation's seventh rated player, and one stroke behind Ramon Bescansa of UNC, who set the course record with a 64 in the second round.
Walters has shot eight of his last 10 rounds of golf under par with one round at even par, with only one round being above par. Five of those ten rounds have been in the 60's with his low round being a 65 in the first round on Saturday. His stroke average is 69.1 over the last ten rounds which spans the final round of the Las Vegas Intercollegiate (70), the Chris Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational (68-72-67), the Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational (71-67-71), and his 65-73-67 performance this past weekend.
Sophomore Fernando Mechereffe played the best tournament of his young collegiate career by firing a 73-67-69 (209, -7) to finish eighth. The three-day total of 209 was the lowest total of Mechereffe's career and ranks tied for tenth all time in school history. It marked the first time that he has fired two rounds in the 60's in a tournament.
Team leaders Garth Mulroy and Jason Moon also played brilliant golf as both golfers finished at two-under-par (214) for the tournament. They finished tied for 14th as the senior Mulroy shot a final round 72 and the junior Moon carded a 73 to close out his scoring.
Freshman Rodney Thomas concluded the Wolfpack scoring with a final round 74 and finished 63rd with a 229.
NC State was the only team in the tournament to place its top-four golfers in the top-20 of the individual standings. As a team the Wolfpack was 22-under-par and was seven-under-par in round one, eight-under-par in round two, and seven-under-par in round three.
The Wolfpack heads into the ACC Championships looking for their second championship in school history in the nation's premier golf league. Play begins Friday, April 19th, at the Old North State in New London, North Carolina and runs through Sunday's final round.
