NC State Men Sweep Singles In Victory

Raleigh, N.C.--Seniors Ryan Boward and Bryce McGrory rebounded from a frustrating doubles outing to propel the NC State men's tennis squad to a 6-1 victory over the visiting East Carolina Pirates in an emotionally-charged non-conference tilt. NC State improves to 5-17 with the victory, while East Carolina falls to 4-14 overall.
NC State began the match strong with a dominating doubles performance at No. 3 by senior Brian Rosenthal and sophomore Jon Davis. Rosenthal, a staple of the Wolfpack tennis program for the past four seasons, provided a spark in his first match of the season with his stellar play in the 8-2 victory.
However, the Pirates later clinched the doubles point when Paulo Baumer and Felipe Fonseca withstood the attack of Boward and McGrory in a seesaw affair that the ECU pair won 7-2 in the tiebreaker.
That would be all East Carolina would get on the evening, however, as the Wolfpack swept the singles competition, winning four of the six matches in straight sets. McGrory would exact sweet revenge against ECU's Fonseca at No. 4 with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 victory, as would Boward against Baumer at No. 2 (7-5, 6-4) to clinch the match.
Freshman R.J. Murray ran his winning streak to five with a straight-set win against Brad Sullivan, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6). The tiebreaker was tied a 6-6 all in the second set until Sullivan was accessed a point penalty for blasting a ball out of the complex after losing a point to Murray. Murray evened his record at 10-10 with the victory.
The Wolfpack will face off with Clemson on Friday at noon for their final home match of the season.
