GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNCG baseball squad picked a bad time to register its poorest pitching and defensive performance of the season. North Carolina State, which entered the game with a team .391 batting average, pounded out 10 hits, but also benefited from five Spartans errors and nine walks to get past UNCG, 16-5, in 5 and 1/2 rain soaked innings at UNCG Baseball Stadium Tuesday night.
The Wolfpack jumped on Spartans starter Aaron Horne. Horne, who was making his first start since February 26, was charged with seven runs, six earned, on five hits in just 1.2 innings of work. The junior did strikeout three, but also walked three.
A sign of things to come, Marc Maynor led of the ball game with a walk. After Chad Orvella struck-out looking, Brian Wright doubled to right center to give NC State the lead, 1-0. Brian Riley followed with a single and David Hicks pushed another run across the board with a sacrifice fly.
The Wolfpack broke the game wide open in the second and third inning. Riley provided the key blow in the second inning with a three-run double into the right centerfield gap. NC State plated five runs in the second and tacked on five more in the third to, for all intents and purposes, put the game out of reach. Riley paced the NC State attack. The backup catcher went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Adam Hargrave went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. In fact, the Wolfpack had seven players score more than two runs.
NC State starter Daryl Minugh pitched pretty well, especially considering it was the southpaw's first start of the 2002 campaign. Minugh, who had arm surgery in the off-season, tossed all 5.0 innings and limited the Spartans attack to just five runs, all earned, on four hits. Minugh struck out five, walked five and threw 103 pitches.
Kirk Strebin led the Spartans offense with a pair of hits and three RBI. Jason Sarvis, who entered with a season-best 11 game hitting streak, was held hitless in three plate appearances, but did manage to register a RBI ground out.
