Raleigh, N.C. - NC State continued its winning ways Friday afternoon, defeating UNC-Wilmington in straight sets on the courts of the Wolfpack Tennis Complex. The match was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday in Wilmington, but due to the threat of inclement weather, the teams held the match in Raleigh.
NC State (5-4) grabbed the doubles point to get things started early. Katrina Gildemeister and Kristen Nicholls hammered the Seahawks tandem of Mandy Bullard and Kathleen Bowles, 8-2. Jennifer Jassawalla and Myrna Bawono handed Wilmington's Hunter McRae and Sallie Keiser a loss at the No. 2 doubles, and at No. 3, partners Loni Worsley and Landis Strader took down Joy Solc and Jacky Gibbens.
The Pack swept singles play, winning all six matches. Gildemeister defeated Gibbens at the No. 1 spot, while Nicholls played her best match of the year at the No. 2 position, blistering Wilmington's Bullard in straight sets of 6-1, 6-3. Bawono took little time to put down Solc at the No. 3 spot. Jassawalla moved into the No. 4 spot for the first time this year to defeat Kimberly Barnett easily, 6-2, 6-0. Staddelmann and Strader both dominated their opponents and put them down in straight sets.
The Pack will travel to Clemson for ACC play next weekend. The match will be held Saturday, March 9 at noon in Greenville, S.C.
