Men's Golf Out of the Rough in Second Round

San Juan, P.R.- N.C. State's men's golf team stands in eighth place after the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The Wolfpack started the day 14th in the 15 team field after an opening round 303. The second round was a 21-stroke improvement on day one as all five Wolfpack golfers fired rounds under or at even par to finish at 282 and six places higher in the team standings. N.C. State was the only school in the second round to have all five golfers shoot par or better. The team score for the second round was the third lowest on the day, trailing only overall leader Georgia Tech (275), and third place Purdue (278).
Junior Jason Moon is the highest placing Wolfpack golfer after the completion of two rounds, firing a second round 69 (-3) placing him tied for 17th. Sophomore Fernando Mechereffe also shot a 69 to finish in a tie for 21st.
Juniors Justin Walters and Garth Mulroy chipped in 72 apiece. Walters is locked ina tie for 35th while Mulroy currently stands in T-54th. Freshman Banks Wood finished the second round tied at 42nd. Wood's rounds of 77 and 72 at the Puerto Rico Classic were season best rounds for the freshman who had competed in only one other tournament this year.
Play resumes tommorrow morning at 8 a.m. for the final round at the Rio Mar Country Club.
