RALEIGH, N.C. - Sophomore righthander Daniel Caldwell pitched six strong innings and freshman DH Tim Coffield knocked in six runs to lead NC State to a 23-2 win over Coppin State on Friday in the first game of a three-game set. The Wolfpack improved to 5-3 overall with the win, while the Eagles fell to 0-3 with the loss. The game was stopped in the seventh innning due to the 10-run rule.
Caldwell (2-1) picked up the win for the Wolfpack, tossing six innings while allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out five. Donyell Williams (0-1) suffered the loss for Coppin State, lasting just three innings. Williams allowed 12 runs, five earned, on eight hits. He struck out one and walked two.
Coppin State struck first with a single run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single up the middle by first baseman Adam Figueroa, but the Wolfpack began piling on in the bottom of the first with three runs off Williams. First baseman David Hicks spearheaded the inning with a two-run double to left-center field, and a run scored on a Coppin State error.
The Wolfpack continued to pile up the runs in the bottom of the second, beginning with a sacrifice fly to right by third baseman Jeremy Dutton. Right fielder Matt Butler followed with a three-run home run to left field, his third of the season, to make it 7-1. Coffield capped the inning with an RBI-single to left field to plate Hicks who reached base on his team-leading 10th double of the season. That gave the Wolfpack an 8-1 lead.
Coppin State sliced the lead to six in the top of the third when Solano singled to left field, scoring Figueroa, but NC State continued the offensive onslaught with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Williams began the inning by hitting second baseman Adam Hargrave with a pitch, and Orvella laced an RBI-single up the middle to make the score 9-2, Wolfpack. One batter later, Wright plated two more runs when he doubled just over the head of Otero in center field. NC State's final tally of the frame came when Solano let Coffield's ground ball go through his legs into left field, scoring Wright from third.
The Wolfpack poured on eight additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Coppin State relievers Jason Green and Otero to take a 20-2 lead. Dutton notched an RBI when he knocked in Maynor with a double down the right-field line. Hicks then tacked on another RBI when he bounced a groundout to second, scoring Orvella from third. The big blow of the inning came on back-to-back home runs by Coffield and catcher Sammy Esposito. The Coffield blast was a three-run shot. Dutton drove in his second run of the inning with a double to right.
The Wolfpack scored its final runs of the game on Wright's sacrifice fly to center and Coffield's single up the middle.
Dutton, Wright, Butler and Hicks knocked in three runs each for the Wolfpack, while Maynor went 3-for-3 on the afternoon, scoring five runs.
Game time for Saturday's game is 1:30 p.m.
Notes: The Wolfpack's 23 runs matched its season-high set earlier in the year against Gardner-Webb in a 23-2 victory on Feb. 12th ... The 21-run margin is the largest for the Wolfpack program since it hammered the Marist Red Foxes 24-0 on March 17, 1992 ... Hicks, who now has 10 doubles in eight games, had 10 doubles in 50 games a year ago ... As a team, NC State has 34 doubles on the season and has hit 18 in its last three games.
