Men's Golf Advances to Second Round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The inaugural Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Barefoot Resort got underway today with first and second round action. The first round matches followed suit, with the lower seeds winning seven of eight matches in the morning session. NC State was the only underdog to win, edging a victory over defending national champion, Minnesota. The Wolfpack and Golden Gophers ended the team match in a 2.5-2.5 tie, but NC State advanced to the winners bracket on the tiebreaker, thanks to convincing victories by Fernando Mechereffe (5 and 3) and Rodney Thomas (4 and 3). Jason Moon and Andrew Lewis both lost their matches Moon finished his round and lost by only one hole, while Lewis' match was determined earlier on a 6 and 4. Justin Walters split his round with his Minnesota counterpart David Morgan, leading to the tie breaking decision.
NC State advanced to the second round to face No. 5 seeded Arizona. Play was cancelled at 5:08 pm. ET due to darkness, but will resume early at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. NC State trails through 12 holes with Mechereffe being the only Wolfpacker to lead his match, 1-up.
Rules of Match Play
The tournament format is as follows with two rounds being played on Friday, one on Saturday, and the final round is slated for Sunday.
* Each coach will submit a lineup prior to each round, ranking his players 1-5.
* The No. 1 players from two teams (i.e. NC State/Minnesota in Rd. 1) will play a singles match against each other, followed by pairing the No. 2's, No.3's and so on.
* Each of the five singles matches is worth one point each.
* In case of a tied singles match in any team match (except the championship match) the tied players will have a chip-off at the last hole to determine the winner of the point.
* The team with the most points wins the team match, and advances
